About Us

Formally created as an incorporated association in 1989, the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra (SCYO) is a non-profit organisation that provides orchestral music opportunities for young musicians up to 23 years of age. The SCYO is the Sunshine Coast community’s premier orchestra for youth, drawing talented musicians from across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland into one or more of seven ensembles. Our ensembles offer opportunities for musically minded youth, from novice to advanced, within string ensembles, wind symphony, stage band and orchestra.

In Our Community

SCYO actively supports local school music programs by extending musicians’ skills and encouraging all members to play in school music groups. Each year SCYO conducts open rehearsals for local students to participate in workshops with our junior ensembles. It is here that our local youth can learn about music opportunities that are available to them and make new friends in a wider music community.  Find out more about our open rehearsals and becoming a member of SCYO.

We also perform regularly at a variety of venues and events across the Sunshine Coast and beyond, providing opportunities for our ensembles to gain performance experience and for our local community to enjoy free or low cost musical events. We also perform for local charities and charitable events as well as a range of other social events in our community.

You can explore our schedule of upcoming events in our Calendar.

Opportunities For Our Musicians

Our ensembles generally rehearse every week on Wednesday evenings during school terms. Membership includes rehearsals, tutorials, conductors, music, guest conductors, local tours, other special events, performances and camp. Each year we also organise a weekend Music Camp which brings all our ensembles together for a fun weekend of intensive rehearsal and performance. Our aim from camp is to take our members’ skills to a higher level, to form friendships, experience different music styles and take their enhanced experiences back to their SCYO and school ensembles.

SCYO provides a wonderful opportunity for musicians to develop their musical skills, and to perform in larger ensembles and orchestras.
