Kate Taylor

Musical Director

Kate has been passionate about music since her childhood and has always been involved in performance, both in schools and in various groups, primarily as a violinist. In her early years she played as a violinist with the Queensland Youth Orchestra and has toured extensively with “Music For Young People” taking music to remote outback Queensland communities as far west as Quilpie and up to the Gulf.

Graduating from Queensland Conservatorium of Music with a B.Mus(Mus Ed) in 1986, she commenced a teaching career, teaching Strings with Education Queensland in the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas. Kate was a founding teacher of the Warwick Community Youth Orchestra (which continues to the present), and while in Warwick performed as the “Fiddler” in the Warwick Choral Society’s successful production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

After returning to Brisbane in 1990, Kate was based at the Macgregor State High School for some 17 years, developing a highly respected String Program as a significant part of their extensive performing arts department activities. Kate has toured extensively with her String Orchestras, playing at international music festivals in Sydney (at the Sydney Opera House), and to Western Australia in 2003 (based at WAAPA). Here she participated in workshops, performed at the University of W.A. and undertook performances with local schools. Her international Tours and Festivals have included performances in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand and in Singapore. Between 1996 and 1999 Kate was the String Orchestra Conductor for the Brisbane Regional Youth Orchestra with whom she toured on a number of occasions throughout regional Queensland and she has regularly undertaken guest conducting and workshop/tutorial roles for regional school music camps throughout south east Queensland.

Kate is no stranger to smaller group performance and has performed with her own String Quartet at various events in and around Brisbane and the Coast for almost twenty years. In addition, she has conducted an “Adult Starters Education Program” in Brisbane over a seven-year period.

In 2004 her work in teaching was recognized with a Teaching excellence award as part of the Performing Arts Teaching Team at the Macgregor State High School (Excellence to the Macs) at the annual Smart State Teaching Excellence awards.

Recently, in 2005 Kate moved with her husband and two children to the Sunshine Coast, and now teaches strings at Talara Primary College and Meridan State College. She is looking forward to bringing her knowledge and extensive experience to her new and challenging role as the Music Director of the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra.
