SCYO Orchestral Groups

All SCYO groups practise at Mountain Creek State High School on Wednesday evening.

Concert with QYO

This year, our members range in age from 8 to 19. For many of the musicians, the SCYO gives them the opportunity to play with a much larger group than they would do with their school ensembles and experience different music styles. Ideally, these ensembles gives our young musicians the chance to play at a higher level and learn more about music in an enjoyable environment.

Regular rehearsals and at least one performance per school term gives the groups the chance to improve and grow musically. Members take this experience with them back to their school ensembles, which can only benefit everyone involved.

2012 SCYO Orchestral Groups are:
  • Youth Symphony (YS) conducted by Chelsey Thomas - rehearsal time for 2012 is 4.45pm - 6.45pm. The SCYO Youth Symphony is an advanced group of string, woodwind, brass and percussion players. The Youth Symphony will begin January with an invitation to play at the Noosaville Citizenship Australia Day Festivities. They will have the opportunity to work with Brisbane Regional Youth Orchestra both in Brisbane and here at MCSHS. During the year we will be looking at the possibility of touring out west
  • Wind Ensemble (WE) conducted by Calvin Hunter - rehearsal time for 2012 is 7.00pm - 8.15pm
The Wind Ensemble is a balanced group consisting of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

  • Symphony Strings  (SS) conducted by Maria Salmon
     - rehearsal time for 2012 is 7.00pm - 8.15pm
Symphony Strings will further enhance the opportunities for string players on the Youth Symphony. They will work on Youth Symphony pieces, as well as their own advanced repertoire. During the year they will have the opportunity for extension tutorials with specialised string professionals.

  • Sinfonia (SI) conducted by Maria Salmon - rehearsal time for 2012 is 4.45pm - 6.30pm
Sinfonia caters for older string players who are about to move to Youth Symphony. They will rehearse and perform their own repertoire, as well as combining with Youth Symphony for some pieces.
  • Amati Strings  (AS) conducted by Donna McMahon - rehearsal time for 2012 is 4.30pm - 5.45pm
The String Orchestra caters for the younger, developing string student.
Depending on demand, other smaller groups such as quartets may be formed in 2012.

Local music teachers and guest conductors assist SCYO at various times throughout the year.
