SCYO works hard to provide music extension opportunities for all dedicated young musicians on the Sunshine Coast. If you've developed a love for music and want to see where it can take you, you are invited to audition for 2012. How do I know if I'm ready? While our groups aim to lift musicians to a higher standard, musicians can start at approximately grade 3 AMEB standard. String players of about grade 2 AMEB standard are accepted into the String Orchestra. If you are not sure what that means, ask your music teacher. It is recommended that you are studying with a private teacher. Audition applicationWhether you are a current member or new to SCYO, you must apply online to audition for a place in 2012. Click here for more information about membership and audition requirements, and to access the application form. All information recorded can only be accessed via SSL secure encryption by SCYO administrators. Contact info@scyo.org.au if you have any questions. Our Annual Music Camp is an SCYO Highlight for many of our musicians! SCYO Camp 2011SCYO rehearsals are held at Mountain Creek High School in the Music Block, on Wednesday evenings. Members are required to be at the rehearsal room by the specified time to enable tuning and set up to be completed for a prompt start.
Tutorials are an important part of the training provided by the SCYO on a Wednesday night. Tutorials are arranged as required by the music director, or the conductor of each group. Tutorials Each SCYO group presents a variety of performances throughout the Sunshine Coast. SCYO includes performances with other orchestras and schools. These performances sometimes involve travel; for example in 2011 we played with Queensland Youth Orchestra and Brisbane Regional Youth Orchestra in Brisbane. We will also be looking at touring the Youth Symphony Orchestra later in 2012.Concerts/Performances An annual fee will be payable on acceptance of a position with SCYO Inc. The fee structure follows: Fees
SCYO uniform per musician TBA Workshops and events away from Sunshine Coast. Possible tour TBA Notes on membership Musicians under the age of 18 require one parent to be an associate member. All committee members are required to be an associate member. Advanced string musicians must be members of both Symphony Strings and the Symphony Orchestra. This is because Symphony Strings rehearsals will include workshopping of Symphony Orchestra pieces. Wind/Brass/Percussion players may be members of Wind Ensemble, or Symphony Orchestra, or both. This is because some Wind Ensemble instruments are not used in Symphony Orchestra. Camp is compulsory. No refund can be given if a musician does not attend. Breakdown of costs Musician fees represent professional tuition at less than $8 per rehearsal, and other variable costs (full details available on request). Partnership funding from Sunshine Coast Council covers fixed operating costs such as insurance and rental of rehearsal venue. Camp cost includes camp accommodation and meals, professional fees for conductors and tutors, and social activities. Parent volunteers attend for free because they work hard all weekend to ensure musicians are well cared for. The exact cost can vary depending on numbers. We will endeavour to get further grants to reduce the cost for camp. Discounts
An additional fee of $25 will be charged if fees are not paid by February 1. Assistance SCYO’s policy is to ensure that musicians are not turned away for financial reasons. If you require assistance to pay fees, please contact the treasurer when the invoice is sent. The executive committee may waive fees in cases of financial hardship. Volunteer Rebates SCYO is a volunteer-run organisation. Many people contribute to the running of SCYO at various times. Our community spirit means that everyone pitches in at some point. Some volunteer roles require a more regular commitment. For certain roles SCYO will offer a rebate of $25 if nominated before the start of the year. These rebates are approved by the executive committee and Music Director before the end of year. This is not payment for time; the rebates amount to a token discount in recognition of a significant commitment. SCYO Not-for-Profit The SCYO is solely funded by fees, donations, events and sometimes grants. The SCYO is a not-for-profit organisation and requires the commitment and support from its volunteers. All positions are filled by volunteers. The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra may use appropriate images (pictures or videos) of children engaged in SCYO activities, submitted by approved photographers and volunteer parents, in promotional materials including brochures, newsletters, the SCYO website, and media releases. If you object to your child appearing in images under SCYO control, advise the executive committee in writing. The committee will make every effort to honour your request, where people can be easily identified. Note that the committee cannot always control the use of images taken by participants or audience members at events.
