SCYO Membership

This page has information about SCYO membership for new and existing members.

SCYO works hard to provide music extension opportunities for all dedicated young musicians on the Sunshine Coast. If you've developed a love for music and want to see where it can take you, you are invited to audition.

You will rehearse weekly during school terms with talented conductors, experience high standard musical performances, and make friends with like-minded people.

How do I know if I'm ready?

While our groups aim to lift musicians to a higher standard, musicians can start at approximately grade 3 AMEB standard. String players of about Prelim/Gr 1 AMEB standard are accepted into the Amati Strings. If you are not sure what that means, ask your music teacher. It is recommended that you are studying with a private teacher. Concert Band only requires limited experience.

The auditions for the following year are held in October or November.  There may be spots open for some instruments outside this process. Please contact to arrange an audition time.

Our Annual Music Camp is an SCYO Highlight for many of our musicians!

Code of Conduct

The SCYO expects musicians to behave in a respectful and appropriate manner at all the times. The Code of Conduct and Responsibility Statement document details the musicians obligations to the SCYO.

Media Policy

The SCYO promotes events in mainstream media, the SCYO website and SCYO facebook. The media policy and associated consent is detailed in the SCYO Media Policy document. Musician's and parents/guardians agree to the policy and procedures set out in this document.

In brief, the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra may use appropriate images (pictures or videos) of children engaged in SCYO activities, submitted by approved photographers and volunteer parents, in promotional materials including brochures, newsletters, the SCYO website, and media releases.

If you object to your child appearing in images under SCYO control, advise the executive committee in writing. This must be done at the commencement of every year. The committee will make every effort to honour your request, where people can be easily identified. Note that the committee cannot always control the use of images taken by participants or audience members at events.

SCYO rehearsals are held at Mountain Creek High School in the Performing Arts block, the Music block and adjacent rooms, on Wednesday evenings.  Note: Stage Band is the exception to the rule.

Members are required to be at the rehearsal room by the specified time to enable tuning and set up to be completed for a prompt start.

 Youth Symphony (Orchestra )  4:45pm-6:45pm
 Wind Symphony  6:45pm-8:15pm
 Concert  Band          5:15pm - 6:30pm
 Amati Strings (junior)     4.45pm - 6:00pm
 Sinfonia Strings (intermediate)  4.45pm - 6:00pm
Chamber Strings (advanced)  4 Sunday rehearsals per term

Tutorials are an important part of the training provided by the SCYO on a Wednesday night. Tutorials are arranged as required by the music director, or the conductor of each group.

Each SCYO group presents a variety of performances throughout the Sunshine Coast. SCYO includes performances with other orchestras and schools. These performances sometimes involve travel; for example in 2014 we toured Sydney for the Australia International Music Festival. We played at the Opera House, Sydney Recital Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and Darling Harbour. Tours such as this may involve extra costs.

Music camp is a fantastic annual opportunity for intense music development and making new friends with similar interests. Musicians work in small tutorial groups and their full orchestra groups. Musicians also enjoy organised night activities and supervised recreational activities, or study and quiet activities. Accommodation is provided in two separate male and female dormitories, each with their own bathroom facilities and common room. Parent supervisors are also accommodated in each building, in separate rooms.
Camp is held very early in the new year, to enable new members to integrate into the group. Camp is included in the membership fee.

An annual fee will be payable on acceptance of a position with SCYO Inc. The fee structure follows:

Musician membership fee $550 - annual fee
Second ensemble membership fee (Youth Symphony plus Wind Ensemble or Symphony Strings) included
Camp Fee per Musician (compulsory)  included
SCYO Associate Fee (one per family)  $50 - annual fee
* Fees may be amended before offers go out.

Notes on membership
Musicians under the age of 18 require one parent to be an associate member. All committee members are required to be an associate member.
Camp is compulsory. No refund can be given if a musician does not attend.

Breakdown of costs
Musician fees represent professional tuition at less than $8 per rehearsal, and other variable costs (full details available on request).  Partnership funding from Sunshine Coast Council covers fixed operating costs such as insurance and rental of rehearsal venue.
Camp cost includes camp accommodation and meals, professional fees for conductors and tutors, and social activities. Parent volunteers attend for free because they work hard all weekend to ensure musicians are well cared for. The exact cost can vary depending on numbers. We will endeavour to get further grants to reduce the cost for camp.

  • $110 discount for second child (annual fee - $440)
  • $170 discount for third and subsequent child (annual fee - $380)
(The associate fee only needs to be paid per family, not per child)

SCYO Not-for-Profit
The SCYO is solely funded by fees, donations, events and sometimes grants. The SCYO is a not-for-profit organisation and requires the commitment and support from its volunteers.
All positions are filled by volunteers.

SCYO has two types of uniform:

  • formal uniform – for formal evening stage concerts and competitions
  • casual uniform – for rehearsals, daytime concerts in the park, camp/workshops/tours
