Audition Invitation

The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra invites applicants for places in 2012.
The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra (SCYO) was formed in 1989. SCYO is a non-profit organisation that provides orchestral music opportunities for young musicians up to 23 years of age. It is the Sunshine Coast community’s premier orchestra for youth, drawing talented musicians from across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland to play music at a high standard.

Audition Requirements

  • As a rough guide, the minimum standard for SCYO is AMEB grade 2 to enter String Orchestra or Wind Ensemble. Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Strings require AMEB Grade 4 or equivalent. Musicians do not need to do exams to audition; music teachers will be able give guidance with these levels.
  • Sinfonia Strings applicants will be assigned a study to prepare 1 week prior to auditions.
  • Wind, Brass and Percussion will play a set piece which will be made available at least 1 week prior to auditions. They will also have to prepare a piece of their own choice.
  • Applicants may be also required to play scales and arpeggios of their own choice to demonstrate different styles of bowing for string players and tonguing and legato playing for woodwind and brass players.
  • SCYO members may be asked to play orchestra excerpts from their current repertoire.

Audition Dates

All current SCYO members audition for their place in SCYO annually, positions are not held permanently. SCYO conductors audition the musicians.

The first round of auditions was held on November 19-20, 2011. Based on those auditions it looks like we will be able to offer additional groups to offer more opportunities for players. We will hold another round of auditions later this year or early in 2012. Details will be announced soon.
Set audition pieces will be sent to musicians well before their audition.

Involvement

Acceptance of a place in any SCYO group is a serious commitment for the entire year!
Before accepting a place you must consider carefully your ability to attend all Wednesday night rehearsals, weekend concerts, tutorials, workshops and other activities. An orchestra cannot group together to perform at a high standard unless all its members reliably participate.

Parental Involvement
If you regularly have time spare on a Wednesday night, help in everyday SCYO activities is greatly appreciated as SCYO operates with parent volunteers. Many jobs are done by parents on a Wednesday night including planning concerts and other SCYO events. Parent information meetings also occur on a Wednesday night, usually once per term.

Parents are responsible for ensuring musicians attend all SCYO events and for collecting musicians promptly from events.
